It’s nearly official, Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables) will be stepping back into the role of Princess Mia Thermopolis for Disney’s planned sequel of Princess Diaries 3, with Garry Marshall also returning to the director’s chair. Marshall recently spoke with PEOPLE about his meeting with Hathaway at which they discussed their shared intention on making the third installment a reality. According to Marshall,
Anne Hathaway is very pregnant, so we have to wait until she has the baby and then I think we’re going to do it.
“Think” does not confirm anything for sure, but just the fact that the film’s two main players are all-in bodes well for the potential film’s development. The original adaptation of The Princess Diaries debuted in 2001 and was Hathaway’s first claim to fame before her quick rise to stardom and accolades. They followed the original up with Princess Diaries 2: A Royal Engagement in 2004.
Although Hathaway is a go, her co-star in the second film, the now über-famous Chris Pine (Into the Woods), has yet to make a commitment beyond joking around with the idea during an Entertainment Weekly fan Q&A. Marshall pointed out that “he’s quite big, you know” but also conceded that his return would be a possibility. There is also no word on the series’ co-headliner Julie Andrews (The Sound of Music). Her film credits of the last five years have just been for the animated films Despicable Me and Shrek Forever After. It would be a big deal for the franchise, however, if she were to make another appearance.
We will have more on the planned Princess Diaries 3 as more information is released. In the meantime, Hathaway can soon be seen in Alice Through the Looking Glass, out this May. Marshall’s Mother’s Day will bow on April 29.
