A series of young adult sci-fi novels with a fairy tale twist will soon get the big screen treatment as an animated movie, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Written by Marissa Meyer and inspired by classic stories like Cinderella, Snow White, Rapunzel, and Little Red Riding Hood, The Lunar Chronicles follows a collection of characters as they navigate a conflict between Earth and a space colony, Luna, led by an evil queen, while also dealing with a deadly pandemic.

Now, a film adaptation is in the works, with a release date of November 3rd, 2028. Noëlle, The British-based Locksmith Animation, which optioned the series in 2022, will produce in collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, with Noëlle Raffaele directing, Lindsey Ferrentino, Kalen Egan, and Travis Sentell writing the screenplay, Christina Steinberg as lead producer, and Industrial Light and Magic working on the animation.

In a joint statement, Warner Bros. Pictures Animation president Bill Damaschke and Locksmith Animation CEO Natalie Fischer said, “It takes a team of true visionaries to bring a world as rich and daring as The Lunar Chronicles to life. This is the kind of story that feels like it was waiting for just the right moment—and the right people—to be told.”

The Lunar Chronicles will be the second collaboration between Warner Bros. and Locksmith, with the first being another animated fantasy, Bad Fairies, set for release in July 2027.
