Angelina Jolie‘s directorial follow-up to last year’s WWII biopic Unbroken looks at far more intimate and personal war between a husband and wife in By the Sea. Based on an original idea and script written by Jolie herself, the story follows a couple in the 1970s who escape to a seaside town in France where their strained relationship is put further to the test by some of the town’s charming locals.
Jolie also stars in the film alongside real-life husband Brad Pitt as their first onscreen reunion since 2007’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which featured another couple at war, however in more comedic setting. By the Sea also features appearances by Melanie Laurent (Beginners) and Parisian actor Melvil Poupaud (Laurence Anyways).
The trailer goes from charming scenes of the French coast and the couple with a musical overlay where a drowsy singer tells of a “perfect day.” This falls away with the trailer’s sole dialogue where Pitt begs the question, “Do you want to talk about it,” transitioning quickly to “Do you want to hurt me,” at which point the trailer comes to a violent end and a return to the former dreamy melodies.
By the Sea opens in theaters on November 13, right in the thick of the awards season push.
