As work begins on season 2 of the IT prequel series Welcome to Derry, Andy Muschietti has discussed plans to combine both parts of his IT film adaptations, IT and It: Chapter 2, into a single long supercut. Both films adapted the two halves of Stephen King’s novel, so by combining them into a supercut and adding extended and deleted scenes, the idea is to create a long, definitive adaptation.
Knowledge of this supercut has existed as far back as 2019, with Andy Muschietti teasing the idea, saying he and Warner Bros. were in “early talks” to work on the cut, with the same details known: it would combine both films and add deleted scenes cut for time constraints, making a cut that would clock in at approximately 6 hours.
And back in January, Muschietti gave further details about the supercut, explaining that “It will possibly have a different structure and will have extra scenes, added scenes. I still have to film some of them … because they are the interstitial fabric between the pieces of the story.”
As for why there’s been no further development over the release of this supercut, Andy Muschietti discussed this in a recent interview with SlashFilm. “We didn’t have time to do it because we were involved in all kind of projects”, Muschietti said in the interview. “The show [referring to Welcome to Derry] had a priority over the supercut.” He then further explained the supercut’s stalled development by saying the following:
“We’re in a moment now where we can definitely go to the studio and ask for support, but when is the question. They can say, ‘Yeah, go for it,’ but now we are sort of committed, like happily committed, to season 2 of Welcome to Derry. And there’s other movie projects going around. But we’re going to do it.”
With these updates, it’s now known that the plan for the IT supercut is to release it after work on Welcome to Derry Season 2 is completed.
