Andrew Haigh‘s follow-up to his Looking series and 45 Years is a personal passion project, the adaptation of Willy Vlautin’s novel Lean on Pete. The film premiered earlier this year at the Venice Film Festival and has now released its first trailer courtesy of A24.
The film is being billed as “An American Odyssey” and features a young hero’s journey through the eyes of an abandoned young teen. The story follows fifteen-year-old Charly Thompson, a recent import to Portland, Oregon with his down-and-out father (Travis Fimmel). Charlie begins to spend his days at a local racetrack where he finds entertainment and partnership with an aging Quarter Horse named Lean on Pete, as well as the horse’s owner Del Montgomery and his jockey Bonnie. When Charly learns the horse is bound for slaughter, he takes extreme measures to save him and go on a perilous journey across the country with Pete to find a long lost aunt.
Lean on Pete hits theaters on March 30, 2018. Check out the official trailer below.
