Andrew Garfield Says ‘Spider-Man 4’ Casting Reports Are Not True: ‘But I Know No One’s Gonna Trust Anything I Say From Now On’

While talking with GQ UK, Andrew Garfield said the rumors claiming he signed on to appear in Marvel’s Spider-Man 4 are untrue, although he is confident no one will believe him. In the minds of comic book movie fans, he could be pulling another No Way Home scheme. Before the premiere of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Garfield was adamant he would not appear in the film, but he would go on to appear alongside Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire, earning $1.9 billion at the worldwide box office.

“I’m gonna disappoint you. Yeah, no,” Garfield told GQ UK about Spider-Man 4 rumors. “But I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on.” He was also asked if he’d even be interested in returning as Spider-Man or in another big-budget Hollywood franchise. He answered, “If it felt in line with my soul and was gonna be fun. Maybe I’m gonna have like five kids at some point, and I’m gonna need to start saving up for the school tuition or something.”

Recently, there have been rumors online speculating that Garfield will reunite with famed director Martin Scorsese to play Jesus in a new movie, but the Oscar nominee said, “It’s not true to my knowledge.” He would love to work with Scorsese again, but “you can’t just keep waiting for Scorsese to call because he makes a movie every three years, and a lot of the time, Leo DiCaprio is in it.”

Garfield debuted as Peter Parker in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man but only played the character for two films as the second one underperformed at the box office. For Garfield, it was a homecoming of sorts after he was “left dangling” after his Spider-Man role came to an unexpected end.

Garfield stated he had his doubts going into No Way Home. “I thought Tobey was not going to want to do that. He’ll act every 10 years, much to my chagrin, and I’ve shared that with him,” Garfield admitted. “When I heard that he was kind of leaning in, I thought it was either going to be the greatest thing in the world or the worst thing in the world. I am so grateful because it was the most joyful thing ever. All the pressure was on Tom.”

As for Spider-Man 4, Holland said on the Rich Roll Podcast last month that the script for the film is “excellent,” and when he read it, “it lit a fire in me.” The film is set to release on July 24, 2026.
