During the year before the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, fan speculation on the possible return of past Spider-Men played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield ran rampant. Garfield especially took part in press tours throughout the year for his films The Eyes of Tammy Faye and Tick, Tick…BOOM! was frequently asked about his involvement. Through it all, Garfield maintained that he was not in the upcoming film.
Once the film was released in December, fans saw that Garfield was, in fact, in the film and reprised his role as Spider-Man alongside Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland. On a recent episode of the “Happy, Sad, Confused” podcast with Josh Horowitz, Garfield had the chance to spill the details on his iconic reprisal and finally talk about it openly.
During the discussion, Garfield revealed that even his former co-star, Emma Stone, who starred opposite Peter Parker as Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, asked him about the possible return, and he had to lie to her about it, too.
“Emma [Stone] kept on texting, and she was like, ‘Are you in this new ‘Spider-Man’ film? And I was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ She was like, ‘Shut up. Just tell me.’ And I’m like, ‘I honestly don’t know.’ I kept it going even with her. It’s hilarious.”
It’s good to see that Garfield and Stone maintain a good relationship, and it goes to show Garfield’s dedication in keeping the huge secret until the film was released.
