Get ready for a comedy reboot of Anaconda from Sony. The studio announced Friday that Tom Gormican is set to direct a reboot of the 1997 snake-focused horror film, and will hit theaters on Christmas Day of 2025. Paul Rudd and Jack Black will star in the new movie by Columbia Pictures. Gormican is best known for directing The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and helms the film from a script co-written with Kevin Etten. Brad Fuller and Andrew Form produce for Fully Formed.
In the announcement video, Rudd and Black tease the film. Black says of the film “There’s gonna be a big f***ing snake, and it’s gonna rip.” Rudd adds, “You want to get scared? You want to laugh? You want to celebrate with your friends? Or maybe you’re alone and sad and have nobody, but just want to forget about that?”
In August, The Hollywood Reporter reported the film was in development. Since then no plot details have been revealed and it is still tightly under wraps.
The 1997 Anaconda film directed by Luis Llosa starred a cast including Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, Ice Cube, and Jon Voight. The first film focused on a National Geographic film crew hunting for the world’s biggest and deadliest snake. It surpassed $136 million at the worldwide box office (equal to $269 million today). A number of sequels were created after that.
Rudd starred in this year’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and stars with Jenna Ortega in A24’s upcoming Death of a Unicorn, set for a spring release. Black had voice roles in Kung Fu Panda 4, and Borderlands. He also stars in A Minecraft Movie, releasing in April.
