Rising auteur Ana Lily Amirpour is preparing for her third feature film, Blood Moon, and has set Kate Hudson and Craig Robinson as two of its stars, with Zac Efron in talks to join. Deadline first reported the news.
Amirpour broke out onto the scene with A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night and Venice prize-winning pic The Bad Batch. With just two films, she has become known as one of the most creative and avant-garde filmmakers working today.
Blood Moon will follow a girl with “strange and dangerous abilities who escapes from a mental institution in New Orleans.” According to Deadline, the film will take place in the hedonistic streets of New Orleans, inspired by fantasy-action films of the ’80s and ’90s. It will feature violent, humorous, and strange scenes set to music ranging from metal to Italian techno.
Oscar-winning producer John Lesher (Birdman) is helping to finance the film, which will be shopped to buyers at the upcoming AFM. “Lily’s unique vision and poetic style sets her apart from the pack. She is truly one of the most exciting filmmakers working today,” Lesher commented.
Hudson’s last film was 2017’s Marshall. She is joining the film after recently giving birth. She’ll soon be seen in Sia’s directorial debut, Music. Robinson has stayed mainly in the television realm as of late, voicing a character in Netflix’s Big Mouth, but also appears in the James Franco-directed Zeroville this year. Efron last starred in The Greatest Showman and will soon be seen in Harmony Korine’s The Beach Bum.
