Netflix’s The Old Guard has been the talk of audiences this month, with positive reviews and an outstanding performance by Charlize Theron, but another Netflix movie has been quietly dominating for the streaming service, despite negative reviews.
Nasim Pedrad’s Desperados, which hit the service July 3rd, has worked its way into Netflix’s Top 10 list and has remained quietly in the Top 4 for several weeks. This is a feat for the film, as Netflix did not put a lot of money and marketing power behind the film and it wasn’t aided by positive reviews.
The film is running at a very low 14% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with only 29 critical reviews. While the streaming giant doesn’t release official numbers for their content, Forbes keeps a running tally of the most popular movies on Netflix at a given time with Desperadoes having more overall traction for the company than their tentpole The Old Guard.
Desperadoes is a romantic comedy that follows Nasim Pedrad of SNL fame as she goes on wild journey in order to track down an email she sent a date about ghosting her after he has an accident while living in Mexico.
While the film hasn’t been enjoyed by critics, audiences sure seem to love it and it could provide some levity for movie fans everywhere in times that certainly require it.
