Comedienne Amy Schumer makes her debut as a leading-actress with the romantic comedy Trainwreck. The film was written by Schumer herself, and has received the guiding direction of comedy producing legend Judd Apatow – who we rarely see in the director’s chair anymore (he last directed 2012’s This Is 40). Also starring SNL-alum Bill Hader, the film offers its own humorous glimpse into the modern dating world through the eyes of its hot mess protagonist, Amy (played of course by Schumer).
Some (very) notable faces round out the cast, with NBA athlete LeBron James making his acting debut, an unexpected Tilda Swinton (Moonrise Kingdom) playing Amy’s boss, and appearances from rising actress Brie Larson (Short Term 12), and current SNL cast member Vanessa Bayer, among others.
Judging by the trailer, Schumer seems to want to redefine the “rom-com woman” by making her an unapologetic “trainwreck.” Whereas many romantic comedies in the past have female protagonists that are otherwise perfect if not for one superficial flaw – i.e. clumsiness, being tightly wound, former heartbreak, the list goes on – Schumer’s leading lady will try to explore the truth behind the “modern woman” and modern romance.
Trainwreck opens this summer on July 17. Check out the trailer below:
