Amy Adams to Tell ‘Story of Your Life’

Amy Adams, 5-time Oscar bridesmaid and current Lois Lane, may be heading to the alien invasion science fiction thriller Story of Your Life.  The upcoming film tells the story of a respected female linguist is brought aboard by the military to decipher whether the alien craft that have invaded planet Earth come in peace or pose a threat.  The mystery of the tale is further deepened when she starts to experience vivid flashbacks that brings the extraterrestrial invasion into a starker focus. If Adams is attached, it would mark a decidedly different sort of movie than she’s done to this point in her career.  Denis Villeneuve, the director of last falls’ Prisoners is slated to direct.

The departure for Adams comes at a time when she appears to be on a tremendous hot streak.  Riding high from her Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe winning performance in David O. Russell’s American Hustle and her co-starring part in Spike Jonze’s Oscar-winning Her, Adams in undeniably in the peak of her career with a few choice roles already in the can as well as an eagerly awaited franchise waiting in the wing.  Adams will next appear on screen in the drama Lullaby opposite Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy), and will follow that with a potentially awards bait turn in Tim Burton’s Big Eyes, where she will portray real-life artist Margaret Keane opposite Christoph Waltz.  Afterwards, there’s the little, still untitled “Batman vs. Superman” project to follow.

For added measure, director Villeneuve is currently offering an eclectic and compelling résumé of his own.  The director, who broke through a few years prior with the Canadian film Incendies (which was nominated for the Best Foreign Film Academy Award in 2011), is coming off the well-received drama Prisoners last fall and the positively reviewed Jake Gyllenhaal oddity Enemy, which is currently in theaters. The director is set to film the thriller Sicario with Emily Blunt before Story of Your Life starts shooting.

Story of Your Life was written by Eric Heisserer and is an adaptation of a short story by acclaimed author Ted Chiang.  Heisserer previously wrote the screenplays to the horror remakes The Thing (2011) and A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) and made his directorial debut last fall with Hours, which featured one of the last performances of the late Paul Walker.  FilmNation and Lava Bear Films are producing and the filmmakers are hoping to start shooting the film next year.
