The latest trailer for the Ron Howard film Hillbilly Elegy was released by Netflix last week. The film stars Amy Adams and Glenn Close in harrowing tale based on the 2016 Memoir by J.D. Vance, that has the subtitle: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis.
Hillbilly Elegy is about just that. J.D. Vance (Gabriel Basso) must return home in the midst of a family crisis. The current Yale Law student must also balance his relationship with his mother Bev(Amy Adams) as well as his grandmother, Mamaw (Glenn Close). The film is about family and the lasting effects each member of the family has on JD.
The film is based on a New York Times bestseller by J.D. Vance which is based on his actual life. Helming the latest awards buzz film for Netflix is Oscar award winner, Ron Howard. His latest blockbuster Solo received mixed reviews, although he jumped in the director’s seat last minute. However, Howard is incredibly busy as of late, he is in various stages of six separate film projects. The filmmaker certainly brings experience to any movie he directs.
Amy Adams and Glenn Close look fantastic in the trailer and this film could be huge for the missing piece in their careers. The two have a combined thirteen Oscar nominations with zero wins.
Close has been in the industry for over six decades and has been nominated for a variety of roles including for leading roles at the Oscars in 1988 Fatal Attraction, in 2011 Albert Nobbs, and most recently in 2019 for The Wife. Her next project will be a musical adaptation of the classic 1950 noir film Sunset Boulevard, where she will play the infamous femme fataleNorma Desmond.
Amy Adams on the other hand has been in the industry for three decades now, racking up six Oscar nominations on the way. American Hustle and Vice are her latest nominations, though other movies like The Master and Arrival stick out as some of her best performances. Adams is also on the musical train as she will star in an adaptation of the Broadway show Dear Evan Hansen.
Hillbilly Elegy and more so the performances by Adams and Close have the ability to take home some awards. The pandemic has stifled most competition and while these actors would still have a chance in any normal year, their chances greatly increase with the lack of competition.
The film also stars Gabriel Basso and Haley Bennett and is set for a November 24 release on Netflix.
