The tariff situation continues to threaten the film industry when it comes to foreign film markets. As the situation continues to change, other markets have to battle against those within the US to keep their films flowing into the region.
The impact is felt mostly from Jon Voight, President Trump’s own personal ambassador for Hollywood. Voight himself has appeared in many films, from Deliverance and Mission: Impossible to Transformers and National Treasure.
Deadline reports that on top of incentives for production, Voight’s plan, presented to President Trump, led to a whopping 100% tariff on both imported films and films shot in other countries.
Guy Bisson of Ampere Analysis spoke about the impact of the tariffs on the industry, as well as how to improve the state of other films coming into the country that will be impacted. He broke down the reported numbers of how projects shot within Europe can be mutually beneficial to both sides. Specifically, European businesses will benefit from having the US-based projects film there, while the projects themselves benefit when branching out into Europe when it comes to their profit.
During their report, Deadline also reported Bisson emphasized that this is currently just talk. Nothing has been set to move forward as of now, with Bisson hoping that it doesn’t go beyond this point.
