With the rapidly evolving and competitive landscape of streaming services, Amazon Studios modified their film release strategies with the upcoming premiere of their dramatic thriller The Aeronauts, according to Deadline. Amazon moved the film’s debut to Fall 2019 and has cut short the amount of time the film will be in theaters, allowing for an earlier release on Amazon. This is an effort to have the most viewers possible, especially since its release will be around the holidays. Amazon Prime members, who also have access to their video streaming services, numbered at 100 million this past April.
The change in the amount of time the film will be in theaters affects Amazon’s plan to have a one-week IMAX release. It will be interesting to see if Amazon still continues with this agreement given that certain scenes were tailored toward the IMAX viewing experience. Going forward, Amazon will assess each film and decide on a case-by-case basis how they will approach theatrical releases.
This Tom Harper-directed film explores the fantastic, yet dangerous ambitions of young widow Amelia Wren (Felicity Jones) and scientist James Glaisher (Eddie Redmayne) to venture into the highest parts of the atmosphere on a hot air balloon. The suspense is heightened given how The Aeronauts takes place in 1862, a time when investigating this part of the earth was considered mysterious and perilous.
