Amazon Studios appears set to collaborate with Scott Free and writer/director Wash Westmoreland on the upcoming drama The Earthquake Bird, an adaptation Susanna Jones’s John Llewellyn Rhys Prize and the Crime Writers’ Association New Blood Dagger award winning novel. According to Deadline, Westmoreland will direct as well as pen the screenplay for the upcoming drama.
Described as a female-centric noir, The Earthquake Bird concerns two women who fall for the same man in early 1990s Tokyo; dangerous ramifications ensue. No casting has been announced as of yet but top actresses may yet join the film considering Westmoreland’s last film was the critically admired Alzheimer’s drama Still Alice (2014) – film that earned Julianne Moore an Academy Award. Westmoreland co-directed that feature, as he had his previous movies The Last of Robin Hood and the Sundance prize winner Quinceanera, with partner Richard Glatzer. Glatzer unfortunately lost his battle with ALS shortly after Still Alice opened in theaters. Westmoreland may also be attached to direct the upcoming bio Colette based on a script he co-wrote with Glatzer; Keira Knightley was tapped to star.
For Amazon and Scott Free, this marks their first film collaboration although both companies teamed up for the Amazon series The Man in the High Castle. We will stay tuned to latest developments on The Earthquake Bird as they come in.
