Amazon MGM’s Rom-Com Follow-Up ‘Red, White And Royal Wedding’ Adds To Their Sparkling Cast

A tale as old as time, one of a rivalry between nations with the potential to further sour or bloom into friendship – or even romance. Red, White, and Royal Blue plays on the tension between America and the UK that has existed for hundreds of years, while not only giving a brief peek into how politics within a democracy and a monarchy are ran, but also how they are similar yet also vastly different. For example, how non-conforming behavior is frowned upon on both sides of the pond in the name of honoring one’s loyalty to home & country.

The romantic-comedy based on the 2019 novel by Casey McQuiston stars Nicholas Galitzine (The Idea of You) and Taylor Zakhar Perez (The Kissing Booth 2 & 3), along with Uma Thurman (Kill Bill) and Sarah Shahi (Sex/Life). With the success and popularity of the first film, a sequel to the 2023 movie has been in the works and began filming this month.

Along with this exciting news comes that of new cast additions: Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) and Chloe Fineman (Saturday Night Live), both boasting substantial success in film & television. Though Red, White & Royal Blue was the directing debut for Matthew López (known for his play, The Inheritance), Jamie Babbit (But I’m A Cheerleader) will be directing the follow-up, and the script will be credited to Gemma Burgess – this article from Teen Vogue speaks on the details of early talks of Amazon green-lighting the sequel and more.

The film not only celebrates LGBTQ+ relationships and entertains audiences with witty & slapstick humor, but also entertains the idea that love can truly overcome & conquer all by embracing the optimism of what is possible should a common ground be met between the two nations from the foundation of love between the two protagonists. It uses the stereotypical opposition as it allows the characters to soften and evolve into romance, initiating the turning of the page towards alliance instead of malice – Red, White & Royal Wedding is anticipated to show the continuance of this notion.

Though still in early production, Amazon MGM Studios is aiming for a Spring or Summer release in 2027 who are undoubtedly hoping for a repeat success of the initial installment that garnered record-breaking views by being the most watched film on Prime Video worldwide within its first 3 weeks of release, placing it in the top 3 most-watched romantic comedy films of all time on the streaming giant.
