Amazon MGM is about to get the ball rolling on its next project. Coming from David Weil, the thriller film, titled Tyrant, has not only begun production, but has also added several new talents to the cast. Before the new cast members were announced, there was just a trio of A-list actresses attached to headline. Charlize Theron, Julia Garner, and Demi Moore were the first to be confirmed, with all three actresses having lengthy experience with the thriller genre. Now, they’re set to be joined by Omar Apollo, Paapa Essiedu, Nara Smith, and Hudson Williams.
Despite the casting updates forming a more robust lineup, the plot hasn’t yet been fully revealed. Amongst the details revealed is that the story is set in New York, and that it’ll be involved with the finer dining experiences within the city. Tyrant will mark the first feature directorial credit for Weil. He has worked closely with Amazon before, however, as he’s directed episodes of Solos and Hunters, both of which are Prime Video exclusives. He also directed an episode of Citadel’s upcoming season, which is expected to drop on Prime Video on May 6th.
Deadline noted that three of the four newly cast stars have some sizable credits to their respective résumé. Apollo, although also widely known for his musical career, appeared in 2024’s Queer. Essiedu, who rose to a higher popularity thanks to his casting in the new Harry Potter series, made waves when he starred in I May Destroy You, while Williams is most well-known for the recently released Heated Rivalry. Smith, however, doesn’t come from a film or television background, but isn’t camera-shy in the slightest. She built her reputation on TikTok, focusing on the topics of cooking and fashion.
