Deadline has reported that Allison Williams is set to star and executive produce a tech horror thriller entitled ‘M3GAN’ for Blumhouse and Universal. This will be a reunion of sorts for Williams and Blumhouse as their first production together was the critically acclaimed social horror film ‘Get Out’ by Jordan Peele. Ironically this latest film is titled ‘M3GAN’ which harkens back to a Key & Peele sketch where a man tries to give his date, Meegan, her coat back, though Jordan Peele is not attached to this project.
Instead, this film follows Gemma (Williams), a developer for a toy company, who creates M3GAN, a toy programmed to be a wonderful companion for children. Gemma is reunited with her orphaned-niece and tests M3GAN for her niece. Following that set-up and with ties to Blumhouse, one can assume the problems that follow Gemma and her niece.
The film will be directed by Gerard Johnstone who previously wrote and directed ‘Housebound,’ a critically acclaimed horror comedy from 2014. The story is by James Wan, while the script is written by Akela Cooper, who previously has written for many TV shows including ‘Luke Cage.’ With this talent behind the camera, including Williams, it will be fascinating to see where this project goes.
However, Blumhouse horror films are typically hit or miss. ‘Get Out’ was a huge critical and financial success. 2019’s ‘Us’ and and 2020’s ‘The Invisible Man’ have followed suit, thrilling audiences and critics alike. For every one of those movies, there are a plethora of lackluster films, so it will be interesting to see where this Allison Williams led film will fall in Blumhouse’s large catalogue of horror.
Williams was one of the stand-outs in an impressive and unexpected masterpiece in 2017’s ‘Get Out.’ Williams has starred in a few films and TV shows over the last decade, including the HBO series ‘Girls,’ the Netflix film ‘The Perfection,’ and the last two seasons of ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events.’
