Alison Brie, Bo Burnham Join Cast of Thriller ‘Promising Young Woman’

Alison Brie (Glow) and Eighth Grade director Bo Burnham have been added to the cast of Emerald Fennell’s directorial debut Promising Young Woman, according to Variety. They will be starring alongside Carey Mulligan, Adam Brody, Jennifer Coolidge, Molly Shannon, Sam Richardson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Laverne Cox, and Max Greenfield. Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara will be working on the production side of the film with Emerald.

Mulligan will be playing Cassie, a young woman who has dropped out of medical school, works at a coffee shop, and lives with her parents. While her life appears dismal during the day, she leads another type of life at night.

This upcoming thriller is following with Universal Filmed Studio’s commitment to the #4PercentChallenge, which aims at including more female directors to work on films. This initiative was first announced at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Focus Features is in charge of distributing the film, although there are some countries that the film will not be released in. Focus chairman Peter Kujawski said of Emerald that she “generated an incredible script that rocked us to our core, so we’ve no doubt she’ll bring that same energy when directing this story.”

Production will take place in Los Angeles this spring.
