Alien: Romulus made $108 Million in its opening weekend, $41.5 Million from domestic and $66.7 Million in international markets.
According to Deadline reporting this debut is much above expected for the sci-fi horror movie, mainly thanks to an over-performance in China where the film opened at $25.7 Million. This high performance for Alien: Romulus makes it the second-best opening for a Hollywood movie in 2024.
This showing from Alien: Romulus places the film 47% ahead of A Quiet Place: Day One and 17% ahead of Prometheus when looking at the success rates of similar movies according to Deadline. Alien: Romulus’ opening had already exceeded the in-market lifetime of A Quiet Place: Day One.
According to Deadline, top openings took place in China and Korea, followed by Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. The film also bested the opening weekends of the other films in the franchise, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant in Mexico and Brazil.
Imax accounted for 15.5%, or $16.8 Million, of the opening weekend total according to Deadline. This also makes Alien: Romulus the second-highest global start for a film in the format for August. Imax CEO Rich Glenfold stated “Disney’s strategy to lean into Imax in its marketing paid off in a big way — with our network driving strong double-digit share of the box office around the world, including China. Fede Álvarez delivered one of the best entries in this series and Disney successfully leveraged Imax to help put a fresh spin on this beloved, long-running franchise.”
