Alicia Silverstone Returns As Cher Horowitz In Super Bowl Ad

Alicia Silverstone returns as the iconic Cher Horowitz again. The actress reprised her iconic role in a Rakuten Clueless-themed commercial that aired during the Super Bowl.

The commercial begins with Silverstone in front of a crowded high school classroom, with Supergrass’ 1995 old-school alternative rock hit “Alright” playing in the background. She then turns to her students and monologues about the benefits of the shopping app Rakuten. This scene reflects Amy Heckerling’s classroom debate in her 1995 comedy.

Similar to the film, Cher’s spinning closet also makes a cameo appearance. Another shot of Silverstone in the driver’s seat of a white Jeep that just hit a van shows Cher’s driving skills not getting much better after 28 years.

The 30 seconds commercial was filmed in Los Angeles in early December, where the high school scenes were shot at a college high school. Rakuten also released an “Extended Cher Cut” on its YouTube channel on February 6. The extended cut features Elisa Donovan, who played Amber in the original film, and fashion designer Christian Siriano, who created the yellow plaid look featured in the commercial.

Originally developed as a TV series and then as a film in the 90s, Fox dropped Clueless before being picked up later by Paramount. The film was a box office success and domestically opened for $10 million and grossed $56 million before gaining cult status as a classic in the following decades.

In an article by Variety, where Silverstone spoke with Variety, she describes how she felt about her iconic character Cher. “When I think about Cher and how she’s film’s most historic shopaholic, the idea that she would be able to use this app is the greatest hack ever getting cash back on all your shopping,” said Silverstone. “I feel like she would want everyone to know that.”
