Bestselling romance author Ali Hazelwood announced Tuesday that she will publish a direct novel sequel to her 2021 breakout hit The Love Hypothesis, titled The Two-Body Problem, with MRC simultaneously launching early development on a feature adaptation for Amazon MGM Studios. The literary sequel is slated for publication on February 2, 2027. Set several years after the events of the original story, the book will follow the continued relationship between Ph.D. candidate Olive Smith and biology professor Adam Carlsen, navigating postdoctoral professional hurdles alongside the domestic realities of long-term partnership.
The announcement comes less than a week after Prime Video’s September 23 streaming debut of The Love Hypothesis, directed by Claire Scanlon (Set It Up), written by Sarah Rothschild, and produced by Elizabeth Cantillon. The feature adaptation starred Lili Reinhart (Riverdale) and Tom Bateman (Murder on the Orient Express) in the lead roles, alongside Rachel Marsh, Nicholas Duvernay, and Jaboukie Young-White. Taking to social media to share the cover and news, Hazelwood credited the Prime Video film’s cast and creative execution with prompting her return to the characters, stating that watching Reinhart and Bateman’s portrayals made her fall for the dynamic all over again.
While emphasizing that early feature development remains contingent on standard packaging, Hazelwood confirmed that MRC is developing The Two-Body Problem for Amazon MGM Studios. Return commitments for the director and principal cast have not yet been formalized.
