Alec Baldwin makes first legal action after filing lawsuit over on-set misfiring of a prop gun on the set of ‘Rust’.
On Oct. 21, 2021, while filming for the upcoming western flick ‘Rust,’ Baldwin wielded a prop gun that was discharged, which would shoot and kill cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wound writer-director Joel Souza in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
When the incident occurred, Baldwin could have potentially faced criminal charges over the death of the cinematographer, but in October he and Hutchins’ widow Matthew Hutchins reached a settlement. The settlement will allow Baldwin to resume filming for ‘Rust’ in January with Matthew as an executive producer.
The Academy Award nominee will be suing Hannah Gutierrez Reed, assistant director David Halls, prop master Sarah Zachry and armorer assistant Seth Kenney.
Baldwin will “seek to clear his name” and hold the guilty party “accountable for their misconduct,” the lawsuit reads. Also, Baldwin will also be seeking “compensatory, nominal, statutory, and punitive damages,” through the judicial process.
Baldwin’s attorneys Luke Nikas and Robert M. Schwartz wrote that the defendants owed an obligation to, not just Baldwin, but all crew members “to keep the set safe. Everyone on set, including Baldwin, expected and trusted them to do so.”
