2019’s live-action Aladdin remake is about to hit the $900M mark as the film hits $313.1M domestically and $584.2M internationally. Predictions are that by the end of the theatrical release, the total earnings from this film will reach upwards of $950M. The box office wouldn’t give you any clues as to how the critics received it though. The film is currently sitting at 56% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, but the audience’s score for the film is at 94%, citing nostalgia for the original 1992 animated version as one of the most common reasons why audiences have favorable opinions of the live-action version.
The film is one of Disney‘s most successful live action movies to date and, apart from the Marvel Cinematic Universe films released in 2019- Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home- it’s also been the most successful film in terms of box office earnings so far this year.
Aladdin was directed by Guy Ritchie, director of the 2009 and 2011 Sherlock Holmes films starring Roberty Downey Jr. and Jude Law, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) screenwriter John August. It stars Will Smith as the Genie, Mena Massaud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine, and Marwan Kenzari as Jafar.
The film was released in the United States on May 24, 2019.
