Matt Reeves’ latest film, The Batman, returned to theaters recently ahead of the release of its TV spinoff, The Penguin. But, with the release of the show, Reeves commented on how heavily he’ll be involved with the show.
Reeves’ take on the caped crusader became a box office and critical hit when it was released back in 2022. The film saw Robert Pattinson take up the character of Batman, and will be returning for Reeves’ follow up film in 2026. Reeves is also responsible for other films such as Cloverfield and War For The Planet Of The Apes.
One classic character that The Batman gave a brand new spin on was Oswald Cobblepot, otherwise known as The Penguin. Set up as a crime boss who runs the Iceberg Lounge, Penguin was played by Colin Farrell, who will reprise the role in the new TV show.
Reeves, who was interviewed by Colldier’s Steve Weintraub, was involved with the show to a degree, but he was unable to direct any episodes of The Penguin. He explained how a number of setbacks impacted the production of both The Penguin and the second Batman film, and that it was too much for him to focus on.
Despite this, he did not rule out directing any future episodes. “It all really comes down to, again as with everything and all the questions that you asked me as it relates to the people who I love working with, everything ultimately comes down to schedule,” he said.
The Penguin hits Max on September 19th.
