Adam Scott, most recently known for the Apple TV+ streaming series Severance, has signed on as the lead for the next film from Damian McCarthy, the director of Oddity, which received critical acclaim and won the Audience Award in the Midnighter Section when it premiered at SXSW last year. As reported by Variety, this new film, titled Hokum, will follow a horror novelist, played by Scott, who visits a remote Irish inn to spread his parents’ ashes, unaware the place is rumored to be haunted by a witch. Scott is no stranger to horror films, having played roles in horror films like Little Evil, Krampus, and Pirahna 3D.
A stacked list of production companies, all known for recent horror/indie hits, will be backing the film. These include Image Nation and Spooky Pictures, known for last year’s found-footage horror hit Late Night with the Devil, and Tailored Films, who co-produced the Cannes hit and Oscar-nominated Trump biopic The Apprentice. Producing the film is another stacked list of names known for recent horror and independent hits, including Roy Lee, Producer of recent acclaimed horror films such as Barbarian, Strange Darling, and the just-released Companion. Steven Schneider, who also produced Strange Darling, and producers of Late Night with The Devil, Derek Dauchy, Rami Yasin, and Ben Ross, are producing alongside Lee. Other producers include Andrew Childs, who produced last year’s action comedy Boy Kills World, and Dan Kagen, who produced one of last year’s most successful horror films, Longlegs. Ben Ross, Dan Kagen, Rami Yasin, and Andrew Childs are all set to serve as the film’s Executive Producers.
“With Adam’s talent and charisma and Damian’s unique direction, this is another opportunity for us to push boundaries in the horror genre and continue to make our mark in the international market,” says producer Ben Ross, who also acts as CEO of Image Nation, one of the production companies backing the film, in a quote from Variety. “With Damian McCarthy’s fresh and unique approach behind the camera and the amazing Adam Scott bringing his talent to the lead role, Hokum is shaping up to be something truly special…We can’t wait for audiences everywhere to experience what we’ve created together.” Adds fellow producer Steven Schneider in another quote from Variety.
Filming is set to be done on location in Ireland and is set to begin later this month.
