Adam Sandler confirmed with EW that he was “going to do another movie with the Safdie brothers.” This announcement came after rumors began swirling earlier this month about a second collaboration between the Uncut Gems directors and the actor.
“They’re working hard on it,” Sandler says about the filmmakers. “Their work ethic is bananas. They’re always working, always writing, always thinking. I don’t know what I can tell you, but it’s gonna be very exciting. It’s different. But I don’t want them to ever say, ‘What the hell did you tell him that for?’ So I’ll just let them talk [about it].”
The reunion doesn’t come as a surprise, as Sandler earned the best reviews of his career in his performance as Howard Ratner, a New York City jeweler with a gambling addiction in Uncut Gems. He was snubbed in the Oscar nomination but did win an Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead. Both Josh and Benny Safdie and and Sandler have spoken highly of each other since Uncut Gems‘ 2019 release. Sandler “would die to work with [the Safdies] again.”
“We talk about it constantly, man,” he said. “I love these guys, I love ’em. I mean, they’re incredible filmmakers… Of course, I would die to work with them again, because it’s a brand new feeling. But the funniest thing is when I would say to the Safdies, ‘Your future is so bright,’ they didn’t want to talk about that. They were like, ‘I just like Gems, man.’ They just were so deep in it.”
Nothing else about the upcoming project has been confirmed.
