Despite her industry veteran status, even longtime Fresh Air host Terry Gross has her off days. Actor Adam Driver reportedly stormed out of his interview with the host after hearing a clip of himself in Marriage Story, NPR sources told The Daily Beast earlier this week.
Driver famously has an intense distaste for watching his own performances, while one of Fresh Air’s interview staples is to have it guests elaborate on certain scenes from their work following a clip. Because this was the actor’s second time on the Chicago Public Radio Show distributed by NPR, producers were aware of his wishes to not see nor hear any clips of himself and encouraged him to remove his headphones when the clips played.
The clip in question was of Driver’s performance in Noah Baumbach’s recently release Marriage Story, in which his character sings a portion of “Being Alive” from the musical Company. Fresh Air executive producer Danny Miller revealed the actor left during a break in recording the episode, stating they “don’t really understand why he left,” and “were disappointed that we didn’t have a new interview to share with our listeners about Marriage Story.”
While the incident occurred earlier this month, the news was not made public until this week. Driver can currently be seen in Netflix’s Marriage Story, Amazon Prime’s The Report, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
