Pay wages differing due to gender is a topic that has been debated and addressed for many years now, and it is no stranger to the film industry. Very recently, Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor has commented on the gap in pay, Variety reports.
Making her debut in Saawariya, Kapoor has been an established presence in Bollywood ever since. She’s appeared in other films like Aisha and Neerja, and serves as global brand ambassador on the Cannes red carpet.
At the Creative Industries and Cultural Economy Summit, the actress shared her thoughts on the matter, saying that Bollywood is in-fact changing, but the change isn’t quick enough: “The gender pay gap is humongous. And I don’t think that will be narrowing very soon, unfortunately, but the roles are getting meatier for sure.”
One of Kapoor’s fellow actresses, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, also shared her thoughts on the matter to BBC. “I’ve never had pay parity in Bollywood,” she told them. “I would get paid about 10% of the salary of my male co-actor. [The pay gap] is large, substantially large. And so many women still deal with that. I’m sure I will too if I worked with a male co-actor now in Bollywood.”
Kapoor also went on to add, “there are strides being made, but very few — like Mindy Kaling is doing something… but there could be more stuff that will be done.”
Kapoor stars in the upcoming film Blind, set to come out on July 7th to JioCinema streaming.
