Wicked: For Good hit theaters this week on November 21st, and it has now been confirmed that Dorothy Gale appears in the new film. While Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have spent time with the cast on a long press tour around the world, production maintained secrecy around Dorothy’s casting, as “the identity of her actor stayed secret for a long while amid the press for Wicked: For Good.” That mystery ended on November 23rd when Bethany Weaver took to Instagram to announce her involvement publicly, sharing on Instagram: “What an honour it has been to walk on the yellow brick road with my fellow Witch Hunters.”
In the recent post, Weaver also included several behind-the-scenes images. She shared behind-the-scenes photos, which fully showcase her in the iconic Dorothy costume, along with pictures featuring “Slater and Bailey, as well as Oscar, the dog who plays Toto.” These photos provided confirmation of Weaver in the role after early rumors that Dorothy would be played by Abigail and Matilda star Alisha Weir. However, the production later confirmed that those speculations were not true.
Although Dorothy remains a crucial character in the world of Oz, her role in Wicked: For Good is deliberately limited. Screenrant reported that the character does not actually have as major a role as one might expect, adding that Dorothy does not have any full lines, and her face is barely seen. The scenes in which she is present are largely brief and include distant shots, to the point where, without credits, she might be unrecognizable as Weaver, since she is mainly seen in profile and in long shots.
Even with the limited screen time, appearing in the film remains purposeful for Weaver, with the role calling it “extremely significant to be a part of Wicked: For Good, in any capacity,” especially as it is “one of the biggest movies of the year so far.” Although it is early, initial earnings for Wicked: For Good are estimated to be $226 million worldwide after its opening weekend, $150 million in North America, and almost $80 million internationally.
Wicked: For Good is in theaters now.
