Actress Charlize Theron recently shared her support for Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa with Entertainment Tonight at the Fast X premiere in Rome, Italy. The highly-anticipated film Mad Max: Furiosa (2024), written and directed by George Miller, is a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), which will star Taylor-Joy as a young version of Theron’s Furiosa character.
“I met her years ago and I haven’t really been around her at a function or anything like that. I think she’s going to be totally ok. Without talking to me, she’s going to be absolutely fine,” explained Theron.
Theron also noted that “she couldn’t think of a better actress” for the role.
The film follows a young Furiosa who must survive in a dystopian wasteland after being kidnapped by a Biker Horde from the utopic Green Place of Many Mothers. The origin story is set to star Tom Burke and Chris Hemsworth as Dementus, a warlord and antagonist to Furiosa.
While Theron is mainly known for her intense action choreography and spectacular character transformations (Atomic Blonde (2017), The Old Guard (2020), and Bombshell (2019)), Anya Taylor-Joy has the potential to bring a chilling interpretation to Furiosa with her impressive background in the horror genre (The Witch (2015), Last Night in Soho (2021), and The Menu (2022)).
Mad Max: Furiosa is currently in post-production and releases on May 24, 2024.
