The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles has just announced their latest exhibition entitled The Horror Show, an immersive, 10-month long exhibit that will spotlight the making and culture of horror films.
Part of the slated retrospectives include a 50th anniversary screening of the supernatural horror film Carrie, starring Sissy Spacek, and a John Carpenter: Prince of Darkness series.
The exhibit will open on September 26, 2026, and will run until July 25, 2027. Six themed chambers will be on display, each dedicated to a different subgenre of horror, including gothic, religion, slashers, and ghosts. Props, costumes, and production materials will also be on display.
On the advisory team for the exhibit includes actor Willem Dafoe and actor/filmmaker Osgood Perkins. Of the genre, Dafoe said “Cinema in general engages your sense of wonder, but horror can explode it. It is a popular form, born of modest financial resources and with a strong, lasting independent streak. And it has all the same possibilities for originality, inventiveness, and freedom that it did in its infancy.”
“Horror is crucial to culture and cinema, and to our evolving understanding of what it means to be alive on earth,” Perkins says. ““I couldn’t think of a bigger or better celebration of the films and stories that have impacted audiences so profoundly and for so long. There is something for every horror fan to appreciate and enjoy in this exhibition, a hallway of limitless doors to be opened and explored.”
Other planned screenings include a Halloween night screening of The Craft as well as the Carrie screening, which star Sissy Spacek will be in attendance for. Films covered in The Horror Show include, but are not limited to Get Out, Sinners, and The Shining. Props and costumes from films like Psycho, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Midsommar, Halloween, and Scream will be on display.
