With a new release date on December 25, 20th Century Women is adding up to be another one of A24‘s bids for awards season this year (also including Moonlight, and possibly an American Honey wildcard). The film’s first teaser trailer features a talented indie cast including Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig, Elle Fanning, and Billy Crudup, as well as stunning throwback visuals of Los Angeles in the late 1970s.
The film, written and directed by indie emotionalist Mike Mills (Beginners), follows three women of differing ages exploring love and personal freedom during the 1970s in Southern California, a time rife with social and political change.
Based on the creative team and talent alone, this film will definitely be a commercial draw for indie viewers and will likely attract Academy voters as well, particularly with the involvement of Bening, whose past indie hits like American Beauty and The Kids are Alright seem to have possessed similar tones.
20th Century Women will see its festival debut next weekend in New York (NYFF), and we will have to wait until then to see how it holds up among critics. For now, enjoy the film’s first teaser below.
