The now prestige indie behemoth A24 has acquired Josh and Ben Safdie’s follow-up film to last year’s critically acclaimed Good Time. The project is called Uncut Gems and stars Adam Sandler in the leading role. Joining the cast, according to Deadline, is Get Out, Atlanta, and Sorry to Bother You star, Lakeith Stanfield. Netflix is handling the international release as this film is part of the platform movie deal they have with Sandler.
Also written by the Safdie Brothers in collaboration with Ronald Bronstein, the crime-dramedy story will follow Sandler as a jewelry store owner in the Diamond District of New York City. He also has a gambling addiction and is juggling two relationships. Stanfield is set to play a close associate to one of the store’s high-profile clientele. Also in the cast is Judd Hirsch and Eric Bogosian (Talk Radio). Casting for the rest of the roles is still underway.
This will be a highly anticipated film for the indie crowd, so much so that Martin Scorsese is an executive producer alongside Scott Rudin. The filmmaking pair have already made waves through the intense, gritty, New York underbelly scene and look to be expanding their reach with this film.
Uncut Gems does not have a release date yet, but it is most likely that we will see it in the festival circuit sometime next year. In the meantime, Stanfield fans will next be able to catch him in The Girl in the Spider’s Web.
