Let’s get the obvious joke out of the way: Mamma Mia, here we go again.
Judy Craymer, one of the producers behind the ABBA jukebox musical, its 2008 film adaptation, and the 2018 sequel, hinted in an interview with Daily Mail that another Mamma Mia film could be coming to screens in the future. Apparently Craymer has been entertaining the notion of making a third film since even before the COVID-19 outbreak, although the pandemic has stopped any and all production the film may have been undergoing.
“I was meant to have been getting on with that, in my head, during these months. But then I got hit with Covid fog,” said Craymer. “I think one day there will be another film, because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see…I know Universal would like me to do it.” Considering that Mamma Mia and its sequel were box office darlings, she’s probably correct. According to Craymer, Mamma Mia 3 would contain four new ABBA songs.
What could a third Mamma Mia possibly contain? At the end of the second movie, Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfried) had just had a baby with her life partner Sky (Dominic Cooper). Mamma Mia 3 could be about the trials of motherhood from a pair of amateur parents. Or perhaps there could be a plotline in which Rosie and Bill (Julie Walters and Stellan Skarsgård, respectively) get married, or a romance for Sophie’s gay dad Harry (Colin Firth).
Whatever happens, there definitely needs to be an appearance from Cher.
