Talks of a new installment of The Goonies have been brought up at Warner Bros. Discovery. In a new report from Deadline, which did a deep dive into the company’s upcoming slate for features, plans were laid out for future franchise films. The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, Practical Magic 2, and a new Matrix movie have all been announced. The company also reportedly adds two 80s classics, with “a new Gremlins from Christopher Columbus and a Goonies treatment.”
The original Goonies is an 80s classic. It’s about a friend group living in the Goon Docks in Oregon who are prepared to fight a property development company that wants to take their homes and turn the neighborhood into a country club. They’re feeling hopeless until they discover a treasure map supposedly directing them to the lost fortune of the original Goonie, One-Eyed Willy. The group bands together to search for the treasure and is faced with traps ahead and a family of criminals on their tail looking for the treasure as well. The film has inspired other beloved media, including Stranger Things and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.
Who is involved in the creation of this new Goonies film is still currently unknown, though it could still be considered a major development given the long history of attempting to develop a sequel and/or a reboot of Richard Donner’s family favorite film. One reason a sequel never got off the ground was due to the original cast members getting older, plus the film had several big names attached to it including Donner, Steven Spielberg, and writer Columbus. It seemed the idea would no longer happen after Donner passed away in 2021 because original cast members previously said they would be open to returning but only with his involvement.
The young cast of Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, and Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan were a large portion of the film’s great success. Credit was also given to Donner and Spielberg for creating a familial atmosphere on set with their actors. With the loss of Donner, signs point to this development being a reboot, however, the studio has not confirmed anything yet.
For now, Cinemark is bringing back the original film to theaters for two days only on Jan. 19 and 20 for anyone who wants a day to revive their childhood with the Goonies.
