Hot off the success of his West Side Story remake, Steven Spielberg is now focusing on his new project, Bullitt. The movie will continue the storyline of Steve McQueen’s iconic character Frank Bullitt.
The original 1968 movie starred McQueen as a rough and tough San Francisco cop determined to find the crime boss responsible for killing a witness under protection. Originally directed by Peter Yates, this highly revered film inspired the works of many other filmmakers with its legendary car chase scene. Spielberg and others on the team adamantly note this new film will not be a remake of the original story, but a continuation of Bullitt’s storyline.
The project has been in Spielberg’s sight for years, but due to negotiations with the McQueen estate, it had been set aside for a long time. The groups reached a deal with McQueen’s son and granddaughter, Chad and Molly, joining the team as executive producers. ‘Spotlight’ writer Josh Singer will write the script with Spielberg “attached to direct” this new action film.
There is no timeframe regarding film production but many predict this will not be Spielberg’s next focus with The Fabelmans slated to debut in theaters on November 23, 2022.
