The weekends keep getting spookier for the box office. After the premiere of The Nun 2 last weekend, this weekend sees the debut of A Haunting In Venice, the third movie from the ongoing series, with charismatic Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot.
Along with their similar genres, both films are in a close race for the top spot this weekend, as The Hollywood Reporter states. Based on the Friday numbers, both movies are on track for a weekend between $13.5 and $14.5 million. At this rate, most numbers show Haunting taking the cake.
Haunting is still staying on track despite a seemingly small opening. It still holds over the previous film, Death On The Nile, which opened to $12.8 million in 2022. Both films still haven’t hit the heights of the first outing for actor/director Branagh, however. Murder On The Orient Express opened up to a domestic total of $28.6 million in its first weekend, pulling in a total of $350 million worldwide.
Aside from the race between Nun and Haunting, other films hold good weekends. The upcoming Dumb Money, following a stock phenomenon around the retail store GameStop, opened six locations. While smaller than usual, Sony chose to help the movie amidst ongoing strikes. It’s looking to get a slower release, rather than all at once, but is looking at a gross of $28,806.
While it’s still not in the top 5, unlike its opening weekend partner Barbie, Oppenheimer is still putting up some impressive numbers. It was just able to crack $900 million worldwide, with the numbers estimated for this weekend bringing it to $912 million. With this total, the film will beat Bohemian Rhapsody to become the highest-grossing biopic at the box office. And, as Deadline reports, this pushes Universal over $4 billion cumulatively at the box office. Universal is only the second studio this year to cross that landmark.
