Entertainment Weekly has just released an exclusive first look at Will Gluck’s upcoming romantic comedy One Night Only, starring Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro. The feature takes place in a world where premarital sex is illegal except on one night only, in which, from 7:00pm to 7:00am, people who are not married are allowed to have sex. While it sounds like the plot of The Purge, but replacing violence with sex, Gluck is apprehensive to compare the two, explaining,
It’s less about the act of having sex and more about the pursuit of it. So I guess if you were gonna make this analogous to The Purge, it would be like spending 12 hours deciding who to murder, as opposed to committing the murder [itself]… The reason why I kind of steer away from The Purge is that you’re not gonna be seeing orgies and nudity everywhere. That’s not the movie.
Barbaro and Turner play Allie and Owen, two people who find themselves abandoned by the people they expected to spend the night with. For Allie, it’s her best friend who immediately paired off with a stranger to spend the night with, and in Owen’s case, it is his ex-fiancée, who decided to engage in premarital sex with someone else. Gluck describes them as “two lost souls by themselves in New York City” that find themselves in “a romantic situation” on the “most unromantic night of the year.” For Barbaro, she related the premise to dating in the modern age, explaining,
But more than even being a story about sex, it’s a story about dating. It’s kind of an allegory for dating and how intense it can be when you’re seeking true connection with somebody. I feel like it’s deeply relatable. It’s just supercharged in this one-night premise.
Turner gave some insight into the relationship of Allie and Owen, teasing that their romance isn’t immediate at all. He says,
The universe banging both of them over the head by putting them together over and over and over again on this one crazy night that they both hate. It’s almost a cosmic joke, isn’t it? That they both hate the night, but it’s the night that brought them together.
The first look images depict Turner’s Owen working in a pizzeria, holding a pizza box outside, and, later in the night, show Barbaro’s Allie gazing at Owen working in the dimly lit restaurant. The ensemble cast is rounded out by Molly Ringwald, LeVar Burton, Maya Hawke, Juila Fox, Ziwe, Este Haim, and King Princess. Radio Man is also rumored to make a cameo appearance in the film.
I am sure a teaser is coming soon, as One Night Only is set to release in theaters on August 7th.
