A ‘Bridesmaids’ Sequel Will Probably Never Happen According to Paul Feig

In a recent interview with Collider, renowned comedy filmmaker Paul Feig discussed the impact of his 2011 comedy Bridesmaids.

Bridesmaids starred Kristen Wiig as Annie Walker, a down on her luck baker who takes on the role of being her best friend Lillian’s maid of honor. The movie was a resounding success, grossing over $280 million worldwide and setting the bar for other female-driven comedies. In addition to its financial success, Bridesmaids retains a massive fan following to this day that wish to see a sequel to the story.

Unfortunately for those fans, Feig sees a sequel to be unlikely, stating “Bridesmaids works…because it was about Kristen Wiig’s character who was a very confident person before the movie began who has this total crash because her bakery goes out of business and everything falls apart in her life… That’s why all this stuff happens, because she’s just acting out and trying desperately to save things, and by the end she heals herself, as much as you can. That’s what you latch onto in that film. So to do a sequel, I think you’re basically just gonna have to have a funny wedding.”

Feig finds that it would be difficult to recapture the spirit and comedic magic of the original and it’s not hard to blame him for thinking that. We’ve seen many long-awaited sequels to comedic classics fall short of expectations like Dumb and Dumber To, Zoolander 2, and, to a lesser extent, Feig’s 2016 Ghostbusters remake. But if anyone has the talent to make a sequel that stands up to the original, it’s the cast and crew of Bridesmaids.
