96th Academy Award Shortlists Unveiled; ‘Barbie’ Ahead In Mentions

The Academy released the shortlists for this year’s Oscars semifinalists in ten categories. Through these shortlists, the general public can see which films gained the most support and which have been snubbed.

Amongst these ten categories, fifteen films moved up in the competition for International Feature Film, Documentary Feature, Original Song and Score, and every short film category. Ten films even moved up in Sound, Visual Effects, and Makeup and Hairstyling.

Box-office juggernaut Barbie led the way in Original Score, Sound, and three Original Songs shortlist mentions. Surprisingly, the film did not make it to Hair and Makeup. Killers of the Flower Moon and Society of the Snow followed with four shortlist mentions. Oppenheimer, The Color Purple, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Poor Things, Napoleon, and American Symphony are all tied with three each.

These shortlists can indicate who would come out on top in the Oscars. For instance, Oppenheimer surprisingly didn’t earn a spot in Visual Effects but still gained recognition for categories like Original Score and Makeup and Hairstyling. Since these shortlists don’t include marquee categories like Acting, Directing, and Screenwriting, there is still a chance that movies like Oppenheimer can prove themselves as contenders.

The final nominations for the 96th Academy Awards will be released on Tuesday, January 23, and the ceremony will air live on ABC from the Dolby Theater on March 10.
