The long-awaited new installment of the 28 Days Later franchise is coming to theaters soon and is set to expand the franchise’s world even further. 28 Years Later brings new faces and threats to the post-apocalyptic franchise. Director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland return to the helm for the third part of the series as it picks up decades after the Rage Virus outbreak. Jodie Comer and Aaron Taylor-Johnson now take the forefront as members of a tight-knit survivor community on a heavily fortified island connected to the mainland by a singular pathway. The story takes a shift when a mission to the mainland has more dangers and secrets than ever before.
In a conversation with Empire, Boyle shed light on the survivors’ lives and the 28 Years Later story. Comer and Taylor-Johnson’s characters are revealed to be a married couple and are raising their 12-year-old son Spike, played by Alfie Williams, in a community on Holy Island aka Lindisfarne. Spike is on a rite of passage trip in the post-apocalyptic world of the UK. “It’s a closed and necessarily very tight community,” Boyle said “There are very strict defense laws, obviously, to survive that long in what is effectively an ongoing hostile environment. They’ve created a successful community, as they see it.”
The new plot details bring a different approach to the franchise, focusing on the family of Jamie, Isla, and Spike as they navigate the world of an apocalypse. The family’s story will unfold over the course of a planned trilogy. The next film is titled 28 Years Later: The Bone Later, directed by Nia DaCosta.
