According to ComicBook.com, 28 Years Later has made significant progress in the past year regarding its cast and director, and it’s now getting a release date from Sony. The film is now slated for June 20, 2025, a summer release.
This film will have its original director, Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle, who directed films such as Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours, and Steve Jobs, as well as its original writer Alex Garland, who is just coming off of his success from writing A24’s Civil War.
Returning to the series is Cillian Murphy, who played the main character Jim in 28 Days Later. However, rather than returning to the big screen, he will put his efforts into being an executive producer. It is important to note that at the end of 28 Days, Murphy’s character survives and is shown to be spotted by a jet flying over his location. While there is a chance that Jim could return to the franchise, nothing is confirmed at the moment.
But what is confirmed is that 28 Years Later will be the first film of a new trilogy. This trilogy is confirmed by reports of American film director Nia DaCoasta being in talks to direct the next feature after 28 Years back in April according to Deadline. DeCoasta is a director who has just started in the industry with both directing and writing films such as the recent Candyman adaptation and last year’s The Marvels.
As for the details of 28 Years Later, the plot is currently under wraps but does have a core cast put together. These performers include Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Tenet and The Fall Guy), and Ralph Fiennes (No Time to Die).
It is unknown if it will be a stand-alone film like the sequel 28 Weeks Later or if it will correlate with the previous films. However, since the ending of 28 Weeks shows that the virus turning people infected has spread to a different country, there is a possibility that this plot point would be in this new film.
Only time will tell how connected this new film will become to the overall lore of the 28 Days Later universe.
