28 Days Later the genre-defining sci-fi horror classic will finally be getting an official digital release. The news came from a new page on Sony Pictures’ website, where fans can sign up to be notified of the film’s digital release date.
The rights to distribution for 28 Days Later have been hard to pin down, to say the least. The film was originally distributed by Searchlight Pictures back in 2002, but when Disney purchased 20th Century Fox, and Searchlight by proxy in 2019, many complications arose. It took some time to decipher how and where certain films under the Fox umbrella would be available, and 28 Days Later was one such film. Additionally, the agreement between Searchlight and the UK Film Council regarding digital distribution was drafted long before the streaming market became prevalent. It made it difficult for the film to find a home anywhere. As a result, unless you had an old physical copy of 28 Days Later sitting around, the film was next to impossible to find.
Luckily, Sony plans to release the film on digital platforms in the near future, although the exact date is yet to be revealed. This is a timely announcement since Sony released the first trailer for the film’s threequel, 28 Years Later, earlier this week. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that 28 Days Later will get a new physical release, mainly due to complications with the formatting. Since it was filmed with early digital cameras, the maximum resolution is 720×576. Upscaling the film to 4K or other higher resolutions would be tricky and could potentially ruin the artistic integrity behind the film.
Still, fans will be excited to finally gain access to the classic zombie-horror flick, especially with the third film on the way. 28 Years Later will star Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes. Danny Boyle is returning to direct the film. It is currently set to release in theaters on June 20, 2025.
