A24 Films has set release date for their upcoming dramedy 20th Century Women. The film, written and directed by Mike Mills (Beginners), features an stalwart ensemble cast that includes Annette Bening (The Kids Are All Right), Greta Gerwig (Frances Ha) and Elle Fanning (The Neon Demon) is set to arrive in U.S. theaters on Christmas Day. The film will initially launch in limited release in both New York and Los Angeles, before a nationwide bow on January 20th. Will the film prove effective with both arthouse moviegoers and Academy members alike?
Mills, who directed Christopher Plummer to an Oscar win for the 2011 charmer Beginners, offers his follow-up project – a late 1970s-set coming of age tale concerning a teenage boy (played by newcomer Lucas Jade Zumann) growing up in Santa Barbara, California. Bening portrays his mother, who attempts to give him the keys to a successful adulthood. Billy Crudup (Spotlight) also stars in the film. While its release date is still few months away, we will get the first wave of reviews in just short of two weeks time as 20th Century Women will make it world premiere at the upcoming New York Film Festival, where the film nabbed the coveted Centerpiece Gala slot.
A24 Films acquired the titles early last summer; Megan Ellison’s AnnaPurna Pictures produces and financed the title. 20th Century Women hits theaters on Christmas Day.
