After numerous delays, James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water has finally released a new trailer for the upcoming film. 20th Century Studios. The trailer goes to great lengths to introduce audiences to Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana’s family, focusing on Sigourney Weaver’s Kiri in particular. The vibrant wildlife of Pandora is on full display, with giant whales and dolphin-like creatures on full display. Remnants of human technology and interference pepper the trailer, with large boats carrying cargo and robots stalking Na’vi.
20th Century Studios has also released the official synopsis:
“Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family, the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.”
Director James Cameron has had the film and its sequels in development since 2010 and planned to have the Way of the Water released in 2014. However, developing special filming equipment, such as underwater motion capture, disrupted production, with filming not being concluded in 2020. As a result, the saga’s fifth and final film will be released on December 28, 2028.
The original film left several questions left unanswered. What has happened to the humans left on Pandora and the humans that fled the planet? What is the political situation among the Na’vi tribes now the Tree of Souls is gone? How is Earth faring without its supply of Unobtanium?
Answers to these questions and more will be revealed when Avatar: The Way of Water releases on December 16, 2022.
