The British Academy has revealed the official nominations for the 2025 EE BAFTA Film Awards, with this year looking like the most genre-diverse ceremony yet. Edward Berger’s Conclave, a Vatican political-drama thriller, is at the forefront of the BAFTA race with a total of 12 nominations for categories including best film, director, and outstanding British film. Conclave’s Ralph Fiennes is also nominated for leading actor alongside Isabella Rossellini for supporting actress.
Following immensely close at 11 nominations is Emilia Pérez, a musical-thriller about a trans-Mexican cartel boss, with recognition in categories such as best film, director, leading actress for Karla Sofía Gascón and supporting actress for Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña.
In the nominations press release shared on Wednesday, CEO of BAFTA Jane Millichip acknowledged the variety of genres we see among this year’s nominations, such as musicals (like Wicked) and horror films (The Substance), to historical epics (Blitz) and blockbuster action movies (Dune: Part Two and Gladiator II).
“The 42 films nominated today span a fantastically broad spectrum of genres with enormous breadth in creative expression; from the most intimate character pieces to epic societal commentaries via genre-bending dramas, musicals and comedies,” Millichip said in the release.
Other notable film successes of the year, according to BAFTA’s top nominations, are The Brutalist with nine nominations, and Anora, Dune: Part Two, and Wicked with seven. A Complete Unknown and Kneecap follow behind with six nominations, while Nosferatu and The Substance come in with five.
Out of the 24 nominees in the performance categories,14 have received their first BAFTA nominations. According to the press release, the names include Mikey Madison and Yura Borisov (Anora), Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, and Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez), Clarence Maclin (Sing Sing), Demi Moore (The Substance), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice), and Isabella Rossellini (Conclave).
The BAFTA Film Awards will take place on Feb. 16 at London’s Royal Festival Hall, and will see Doctor Who’s David Tennant returning as host.
