The 2023 Frameline Film Festival will be hosted at several theaters in San Francisco and Oakland and runs from June 14th-24th. The festival will headline a free matinee screening of Pixar’s Elemental, director Kevin Smith’s Chasing Amy (1997), and a follow-up documentary Chasing Chasing Amy, Our Son starring Billy Porter and Luke Evans, and Bottoms starring Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) and Rachel Sennott (Bodies Bodies Bodies).
There will also be a select amount of films available to stream from June 24th through July 2nd for a general admission fee of $11 and $10 for students and seniors.
Frameline, also known as the San Francisco International LGBTQ+ Film Festival, was founded in 1977 and is the longest-running LGBTQ+ film festival in the world. Frameline also operates as a non-profit that advocates for queer visibility and awards grants to rising LGBTQ+ filmmakers and film projects.
In a statement with The Hollywood Reporter, executive director of Framline James Woolley emphasized the importance of the cinematic experience at a theater.
“There is nothing like seeing a great film at the cinema — sharing an experience in the same moment as friends and strangers alike. Despite the challenges that have reshaped moviegoing, we are proud to present Northern California’s largest film festival this year. It says so much about the power and resiliency of queer art and community, as well as the urgent need for it.”
