The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its nominees for the 92nd annual Academy Awards this morning, but perhaps the second most newsworthy topic of the day regards its snubs.
The Oscars have famously overlooked both people of color and women when nominating the best in film each year, and this year’s snubs are no different. Film fans have taken to the internet to express their disappointment in many sure-fire nominees failing to get recognized, including Greta Gerwig for directing Little Women, Awkwafina‘s leading role in The Farewell, and what many considered career defining performance from Jennifer Lopez in Hustlers.
Announcer Issa Rae, who was joined by John Cho in reading off the nominees for this year, voiced her disappointment about the best director category including strictly men, offering a sarcastic “Congratulations to those men” upon finishing the list. While the Academy recognized Martin Scorsese (The Irishman), Todd Phillips (Joker), Sam Mendes (1917), Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Bong Joon-Ho (Parasite) in this category, many feel both Greta Gerwig and Lulu Wang’s directorial efforts in Little Women and The Farewell, respectively, were snubbed.
The 92nd annual Academy Awards will air live on Sunday, Feb. 9 on ABC at 8 PM EST. A full list of this year’s nominees can be found here.
